A Colorado native plant, Chocolate Flower is cold hardy and long blooming.
Rocky Mountain Penstemon is Colorado’s most reliable pollinator magnet — vivid blue-purple spikes that draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds from late spring into summer. Blanket Flower blooms in fiery red, orange, and yellow from June through September — one of the longest bloom windows of any perennial. Apache Sunset Hyssop explodes in late summer with sunset-orange tubular flowers that hummingbirds love and deer avoid. And Meadow Sage — a CSU Extension favorite — puts on a dense, reliable flower show that bees genuinely can’t resist.
Shrubs That Need Less Water
For structure, seasonal interest, and wildlife habitat, these shrubs earn their place year-round.
Rabbitbrush is silvery-gray all season, then explodes into golden-yellow bloom in September and October — one of the most important late-season nectar sources for migrating butterflies. Apache Plume produces white flowers in spring followed by feathery pink seed tails that carry into winter and provide nesting material for birds. Fernbush offers fragrant, fern-like evergreen foliage and white summer flowers — low maintenance, deer-resistant, and beautiful in all four seasons.
Drought-Resistant Ground Cover
Ground covers do the quiet work: suppressing weeds, retaining soil moisture, and filling in the spaces between showier plants.
Angelina Stonecrop is a drought-tolerant succulent ground cover that thrives in full sun and practically glows golden-orange in fall. Creeping Mahonia is an evergreen native that spreads low across dry ground, produces small blue berries for wildlife, and offers year-round coverage without irrigation. Fringed Sage shimmers silver in the Colorado sun, stabilizes soil, and makes a beautiful low-growing companion for taller flowering plants.
Resilient Native Grasses
