Ski Colorado: Hit the Slopes Early and Be Home by Dinner!

Let’s be honest, one of the benefits of living in Overland Ranch in Aurora is that you’ll be just a hop and a skip (okay, a car ride) away from some of the most legendary ski terrain in the country. It’s no secret people fly in from every other state in the U.S. to ski our slops. Whether you’re attacking a bunny hill or ready to carve up double black diamonds, Colorado offers world-class skiing at its best. And, you don’t have to waste vacation days to get there!  (But rise and shine to get on E470 to I-70 early, so you’re not bumper gazing the whole way there!)

Here’s a quick guide to the best ski resorts within two hours of Aurora, complete with a quick vibe assessment and the distances you’ll be driving.

1. Winter Park Resort (80 miles from Aurora)

Winter Park is Denver’s home mountain—seriously, it’s been a favorite of the Mile High City since the 1940s. With over 3,000 acres of terrain, including long groomed runs, moguls, and the steep inclines (declines?) of Mary Jane, there’s something here for every skill level. Bonus: The scenic drive through Berthoud Pass is almost as epic as the skiing!

2. Loveland Ski Area (70 miles from Aurora)

Don’t let the hidden gem label it often gets fool you—Loveland delivers big mountain experiences with a local vibe. It’s known for excellent snow, affordable prices, and short lift lines. Best of all, you can often get from your car to your first run in less than 10 minutes. Quick and awesome.

3. Echo Mountain (49 miles from Aurora)

Echo Mountain is your go-to for a super speedy escape from the city. It’s smaller and more budget-friendly, with night skiing, an approachable vibe, and killer views of the Continental Divide. If you want a quick hit of winter without the I-70 traffic snags, this is your go-to.

4. Arapahoe Basin (AKA A-Basin) (77 miles from Aurora)

A-Basin is for the skiers and snowboarders who like their slopes a little rowdy and their après-ski even rowdier. Famous for its extended season (sometimes open until June!), steep terrain, and the legendary “Beach” tailgate scene, A-Basin is a must-do for anyone craving an authentic Colorado ski experience.

5. Keystone Resort (72 miles from Aurora)

Keystone is all about fun for all ages and, yes, night skiing! With three peaks and a huge terrain park, it’s a favorite for families and freestyle enthusiasts. Stay for the twinkling lights and twilight turns under the stars, if you’re not in a hurry to head back to Aurora.

6. Eldora Mountain (55 miles from Aurora)

The closest ski resort to Boulder (and close to Aurora, too), Eldora is perfect for a quick day trip of skiing. It’s smaller than some of the other resorts but offers a solid mix of runs, accessible terrain, and a relaxed, no-fuss atmosphere. Plus, you can get there via RTD bus from Boulder—the best in eco-friendly skiing!

7. Copper Mountain (91 miles from Aurora)

Just barely sneaking in under the two-hour window, Copper is a local favorite for its naturally divided terrain—easy greens, cruisy blues, and thrilling steeps all separated for a seamless mountain experience. It’s also got a lively village for your post-ski cravings.

8. Vail (112 Miles from Aurora)

Tucked into the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Vail has grown from a scrappy ski town in the 1960s into one of America’s most iconic mountain destinations. The town has carved out a reputation for luxury, outdoor adventure, cultural events, and a sense of alpine charm that feels plucked straight outta Europe. With more than 3,000 acres of wide open, treeless terrain in the notorious Back Bowls, Vail is a skier/snowboarder’s dream.

The newer expansion called Blue Sky Basin adds to the total skiable terrain, making Vail not just big- but legendary. Vail is considered one of the best ski resorts in the world and with its villages and their upscale boutiques, an ice rink, apres-ski bars and family friendly dining it’s worth the two-hour ride!
