Summer Fishing, Diving, Paddling, Hiking and Biking

Summer in Colorado is not a spectator sport. At Overland Ranch, you won’t have to go far to get in on it. Aurora Reservoir and Cherry Creek State Park are practically in your backyard — two of Aurora’s best outdoor destinations, each with its own vibe. Between the two, there’s enough to keep you busy from end-of-May to Labor Day without ever repeating yourself.

Aurora Reservoir: The Quieter Side of Summer

Aurora Reservoir covers 820 acres of calm, motor-free water — which means no roaring engines, just the sound of paddles and the occasional splash. That’s what makes it such an ideal spot for paddleboarding and kayaking. Rentals are available starting Memorial Day weekend, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis — which is the universe’s way of telling you to become a morning person!

The swim beach is open for the season, and the eight-mile trail around the reservoir is open year-round for biking and walking. The reservoir is also a favorite among triathletes and open-water swimmers, with buoys marking training courses. If you’ve ever wanted to try scuba diving, Aurora Reservoir has one of the region’s best training facilities, where local dive shops conduct certification courses. Average visibility is about five-to-10 feet with an underwater sunken Cessna plane to explore around.

And the fishing is genuinely exceptional. The reservoir has produced four state record catches: tiger muskie, catfish, smallmouth bass, and white sucker — stocked regularly by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. It draws serious anglers and plenty of beginners who leave completely converted.

On busy summer days, the beach fills up by late morning, so arriving early is the move. Pack a cooler, bring sunscreen, and plan to stay a while.

Cherry Creek State Park: More of Everything

If Aurora Reservoir is the quiet escape, Cherry Creek State Park is the full-scale summer destination. The 4,000-acre park sits just minutes away, with an 880-acre reservoir and activities ranging from boating and fishing to hiking, biking, horseback riding, and volleyball.

The reservoir here allows powerboats, jet skis, and water skiing — with rentals available at Pelican Bay Marina. The swim beach is sandy, the trails are well-maintained, and the park offers 12 miles of paved trails and 35 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking.

Dog owners will love the 100-plus-acre off-leash area — one of the best in the state — complete with a stream for the dogs to splash around in. There are also 135 campsites if you want to make a full weekend of it.

The Location That Makes It Easy

Both parks are a short drive from Overland Ranch — no I-70 marathon, no downtown city traffic, no planning required. You can be on the water in the time it takes to decide what to pack. That kind of access changes how you actually spend your weekends. It’s the difference between meaning to get outside more and just… going.

Launch your summer from a new home at Overland Ranch featuring four exceptional builders — Century Communities, Pulte Homes, Richmond American, and Toll Brothers — with move-ins targeted for 2027. The VIP interest list is open now to get first access to everything right as it unfolds.
